Annual Preschool & Daycare Fair

A great opportunity for families to meet local preschool and daycare providers. Battle of the Books

The Battle of the Books is a contest that has as its purpose the encouragement of quality reading. It is offered jointly by Bartlett Public Library, Gail Borden Public Library, and Poplar Creek Public Library. Team members read books from a list of books chosen by librarians. Scores are kept and winners are recognized; however, much emphasis throughout the season is placed on the fun of participation and the satisfaction that comes from reading and from starting and finishing an assignment. Battle of the Books is for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.

Teams which meet one of the following criteria may participate:

• School teams from public and private schools located within the library district boundaries of one of the sponsoring libraries.
• Neighborhood teams composed of team members who reside within the library district boundaries of one of the sponsoring libraries but who attend an ineligible school or are home schooled, coached by an adult whose address is within boundaries of one of the sponsoring libraries.

 

Books and Bingo

For 1st graders and up
This literacy program introduces children to all types of children’s literature. Following the books, we will play a variety of Bingo games.

 

Chess Club

Second through twelfth graders sharpen their chess skills in the Meeting Room. 

 

Computer Classes

Schedule a time to learn about the computer lab and available entertaining and educational resources. We offer one-on-one instruction and small group orientations. Please call the Youth Services Department to arrange your personal tour.

 

Creative Reading Club

For students in grades 3-6
Join this club to enhance and practice your oral and silent reading skills. Enrichment activities feature stories, jokes, riddles, plays, poetry, and topics covering history, geography, and science. All reading materials are provided.

 

Monarch Club

For students in grades 1-3
Each program will feature books from the 2012 list of Monarch Award Nominees.

 

Pages Across the Ages
Children ages 6-12 and residents at the Clare Oaks Retirement Community are matched as reading and writing buddies.  Participants will read a children’s book and exchange letters monthly with their partners.  Please see the Frequently Asked Questions for details about the program.

Read to Hogan

Children in grades 1-3 may reserve a unique “one on one” 15-minute appointment to read with Hogan, a certified therapy dog. Your child may build confidence by reading to Hogan.

 

Special Events

The Youth Services Department also offers guest storytellers, puppet shows, summer and winter reading clubs, and author visits.
